Speed colt Passing Shot was ideally suited to the conditions of the Gr.3 BMW Mr Tiz Trophy and he duly obliged to complete a hat-trick of short course victories.

The three-year-old was perfectly placed with 56kg under the set weights and penalties of Saturday’s event at Ellerslie and courtesy of another fine Opie Bosson ride he delivered at the expense of the filly Red Striker.

“Since he’s been brought back to sprint trips he’s found his way,” trainer Stephen McKee said.

“Red Striker was always going to be the horse to beat and it was a good effort to hold her off.

“We might look at taking him back up to 1400 metres in the Wellington Guineas, but we’ll see how he pulls up after this first.”

Runner-up in the spring behind Volkstok’n’barrell in the Gr.3 Bonecrusher Stakes, Passing Shot had won at his previous two appearances at Tauranga and Trentham under Bosson and he again gave the son of Swiss Ace the gun run in the trail.

They were in front 100 metres from home and had enough in reserve to keep Red Striker at bay by a neck.

“He’s a good sprinting colt and Stephen had him in perfect condition,” Bosson said.

“We got a beautiful run and he held on. He’s a natural sprinter and built like it.”

Red Striker’s effort was full of merit after coming wide on the turn from the back of the field while Mighty Maverick gave a bold showing at just his second start to take third.

No Tricks also drew attention to her future prospects with her effort to finish fourth after giving them all a start on the bend. – NZ Racing Desk.
