On the back of a solid second in the Listed Armadillo Stakes at Riccarton last start, Son Of Maher makes his next appearance in the $400,000 Group 1 2000 Guineas on Saturday for Vermair Racing and his team of owners.

While still a maiden, he has shown in his 5 start career so far that his group of owners have an exciting prospect on their hands. From his two starts as a 2yo he ran a nice second on debut over 1100m and was then put into stakes company where he performed well beaten 3 lengths into 5th position.

After spelling he showed he had returned in good order when resuming against the older horses, being beaten less than a length when running into second.

The entire son of Al Maher showed last start over a mile that the further he goes the better he will be. With the Derby in mind he was always going to have one more race before some time in the paddock, and with his good last start run he has earned his spot in the G1 field.

We are under no illusion, he's poorly off in set weights against this field. Its a massive step up with the well performed northern horses going down and he will start at big odds. What he has in his favour is he will honestly see out the mile, with genuine pace in the race he would be a sneaky chance of weighing in. Barrier 9 is a few spots wider than the team would have preferred but premiership leading jockey Lisa Allpress takes the mount.

While a few of his opposition possess a better turn of foot than Son Of Maher, he will come into is own over 2000m and further next preparation.

Son Of Maher was a A$42,500 yearling purchase from the Syndey Easter Sale and is a full brother to Brisbane Cup runner up and 12x winner, Dance With Her.
