SON OF MAHER CONTINUES HIS WINNING WAY..

Feb 12, 2016

An impressive last start victory in the Listed Dunedin Guineas left the team here at Vermair with much anticipation as SON OF MAHER makes his way north in preparation for the Group 1 $750,000 NZ Derby.

With the only defeat in his last 4 starts coming in the Group1 Levin Classic when going down by a nose, the strapping entire son of AL MAHER  has been dubbed 'South Islands favourite son.' While he was 3 wide and over racing he still proved too good to win last start over a distance much short of his best.

SON OF MAHER will next line up in the $100,000 Group2 Avondale Guineas next Saturday for his first look at the Ellerslie track.

The colt has had 8 starts this season for 3 wins and 4 placings, taking the $42,500 purchase to earnings over the $100,000 mark for his group of owners. The only time out of the placings was in the Group1 2000 Guineas when running a very creditable 6th to Xtravagant.

On the track this week we see the resuming LORDE ROYALS step out on his home track at Matamata on Sunday.

He was found to have a few issues after disappointing in his 2 races to date, previously he beat subsequent champion 2yo Marky Mark at the trials before his debut. In his 6 months off he has been gelded and had a wind operation but the time off has served him well.

He has matured nicely and while he goes into this race with no trials after a long lay off, and the wide draw isn't ideal, we expect him to run well with improvement in him.
